UPFL WEEKLY PREVIEW (Week 4)

30 09 2007

UPFL GAME OF THE WEEK

#7 Mullets Have Magical Powers (2-1) vs. #8 Double Lung (2-1)

Two new entries into the UPFL Super 8 this week will face off to see who stays and to see who rises in next weeks Super 8. The Mullets made a big trade this week in acquiring Reggie Bush and Willis McGahee. Does this trade pay off with immediate dividends? Well Bush is on a bye so the Mullets will have try and get by with Ron Dayne filling in for Bush which might just work if Dayne ends up starting for the Texans this week.

Double Lung has been led by the solid play of Joseph Addai, he hasn’t put up huge weeks but he has been very consistent and that has helped pave the way for Double Lung. The Lung needs to sit Drew Brees this week but his bye week actually may be a blessing for the Lung as Trent Green fills in for him this week after a week in which he finally showed he can still pass the ball.

UPFL SUPER 8 – Week 3

28 09 2007

UPFL SUPER 8 (9/25 – 10/1)

Another week with a 200 point score as the Dojo flex their muscle this week. The top two teams the past two weeks also got their licks in as they both improved to 3-0. The fantasy football year has seen itself turned upside on its head as the consensus top three picks in most leagues: LaDainian Tomlinson, Steven Jackson, and Larry Johnson have all been very average or very bad. Where this week take us? Let us first view the Week 3 Super 8.

#1 – AquaSplash (3-0, LW #1): Tony Romo proved his worth by dismantling the bears, and Joseph Addai continued his consistent play as the Splash moved onto win number three.

#2 – Jon Kitna’s Optimism (3-0, LW #2): Kitna again came up huge with almost 500 yards passing as the Lions truly believe that running game is not needed. Marion Barber III also continued his TD vulturing as he put up big numbers again this week.

#3 – No Mercy in the Dojo (3-0, LW #3): A big time week for the Dojo as Anquan Boldin and Roy Williams put up some huge stats to propel the Dojo this week.

#4 – Millen’s Men (2-1, LW #6): Another team riding the Kitna/Barber train, and don’t forget Chad Johnson as the Begnals will keep tossing it all year long.

#5 – Brazicle Dawdlers (2-1, LW –): The Dawdlers rode the McNabb/Westbrook juggernaut this week, and have also received help from Travis Henry who has been putting the yards this season.

#6 – Wolfmans Wolfpack (2-1, LW #4): The Wolfpack suffer their first loss last week as Marc Bulger played horrible, but LaMont Jordon kept up his fantastic play.

#7 – Mullets Have Magical Powers (2-1, LW –): The Mullets have marched to a 2-1 start, but have decided for a change pace by brining in Willis McGahee, and Reggie Bush. Will the new start pay off for the Mullets?

#8 – Double Lung (2-1, LW –): The Lung continues to thrive despite the poor play of Drew Brees. If Bress can turn it around this team may start to put together an impressive winning streak.

UPFL Game of the Week (2)

22 09 2007

UPFL GAME of the WEEK

#3 No Mercy in the Dojo vs. #5 The Perfect Elbow

Two teams who are coming off of successful campaigns last year and off to a good start this year. The Dojo is led by Tom Brady who has been fantastic this year, and once again the Bears D and that Devin Hester character. Brian Westbrook has also been very productive in racking up the yardage but has yet to find the end zone with the Eagles O struggling. Brandon Jackson has been a disappointment so far and with DeShawn Wynn coming on strong could be losing his job.

The Perfect Elbow has received surprising production from Edge James and the Steelers D in their march to two wins to open the year. Of course having Chad Johnson on the team will always help, and last week showed why he is one of th elite WRs in the league. This week the Elbow has favorable match-ups with Shaun Alexander facing the Cincy D, and Ahman Green facing a favorable Indy D. The question the Elbow needs to ask itself is whether Brett Favre is the answer to a UPFL Championship, last week he was.

A great game on paper but I like the match-ups for The Perfect Elbow, and see the score pointing in their favor come Tuesday morning.

UPFL Super 8 – Week 2

20 09 2007

UPFL SUPER 8 (9/18 – 9/24)

#1 – AquaSplash (2-0, Last Week #2): Tony Romo played another good game on Sunday, and Joseph Addai has lived up to hype. With a fantastic set of wideouts this team could be around the top all year.

#2 – Jon Kitna’s Optimism (2-0, LW #1): A win and the drop, but that just removes the big target on their back as the #1 team. Speaking of Kitna he will try to keep it going against the Eagles this Sunday.

#3 – No Mercy in the Dojo (2-0, LW #5): How about that Bears D? Kept the Dojo rolling last year and keeps them rolling this year, but this year they would like to bring the Dojo the title.

#4 – Wolfmans Wolfpack (2-0, LW –): Never underestimate the Wolfman, another great start for the two time UPFL champions. LaMont Jordan has shown he should have been #1 and not LDT.

#5 – The Perfect Elbow (2-0, LW –): Last years dominating regular season performance has continued into this year, the question is can they keep it going once the playoffs come around.

#6 – Millen’s Men (1-1, LW #6): A close loss to the Dawdlers keeps them here as this team still has the talent to cause some damage.

#7 – Jlaw’s Crew (1-1, LW –): Wow! The biggest week in UPFL history has to put this team in the Super 8, but can these players keep it going?

#8 – The Ghost Riders (1-1, LW –): So far so good in playing without Brandon Jacobs, and Edge James has been a big reason why. Peyton Manning also has some say in how good this team can be.

UPBA First Round Mock Draft (v.1)

17 09 2007

afl07.gifUPBA 1st Round Mock Draft

#1 – Wolfman (keeper: Vince Carter): A nice position to be in with the influx of more players than last years draft. The Wolfman could go young and get a keeper for life in Kevin Durant, but I think the Wolfman wants to win now.

Decision: Tim Duncan

#2 – Knight School (keeper: Pau Gasol?): Pending a trade with the Schnooks, Knight School will be trading Pau Gasol for another first round pick. With that said I will base this choice off the fact that Knight School is picking twice in the first round. Looking for a fresh start Knight School can’t pass up on the many young players available here. Tracy McGrady could be a great choice or even Allen Iverson, but youth must be served.

Decision: Carmelo Anthony

#3 – Statutory Defendants (keeper: Yao Ming): The defendants gave up Chris Paul to keep Yao Ming, but I think that parting of company will be short lived, as Paul is the logical choice here to team up with big Yao Ming.

Decision: Chris Paul

#4 – AquaSplash (keeper: Rashard Lewis): Lewis has a new home this year, which really shouldn’t effect his output at all. Teaming up with Dwight Howard will keep him as a scoring punch. With that being said I find it very hard for the Splash to pass up on one of the most explosive guards in the league.

Decision: Allen Iverson

#5 – Blumkins (keeper: Shawn Marion): The Blumkins like many teams last year ran into injury trouble. I am sure they will be looking to make a pick that will bring less of an injury risk, but the one player that pops out at this pick does have an injury history but his upside is way to big to pass up on.

Decision: Tracy McGrady

#6 – Mayn Event (keeper: Kevin Garnet): What a way to enter the league. Land a team with Kevin Garnett and the sixth overall pick. Garnett even in Boston should still be one of the top players in the UPBA. Mayn Event will look to team him up with another explosive player but it certainly won’t be his teammates in real life, Paul Pierce or Ray Allen.

Decision: Chauncey Billups

#7 – Shakers Pizz Plan (keeper: Gilbert Arenas): With Arenas in a contract year GM Shakers must feel good about Agent Zero taking his game to another level. A lot of great players left on the board here, but I find it very difficult for the Pizz Plan to pass up on a Celtic that could be even better with help from Garnett and Ray Allen.

Decision: Paul Pierce

#8 – Wilders Bar (keeper: Dwyane Wade): With Wade out possibly for the first month of the season the Bar will need someone to pick up the slack and try to keep this team afloat before superman can return. Once again a plethora of options available and I think the plan will be to go big for the Bar. This player was a beast last year and was one of the top players overall at the end of the year.

Decision: Carlos Boozer

#9 – Team Brancheau (keeper: Kobe Bryant): First thing this team needs to do is get itself an original team name other than the bland one tagged on this team when they joined last year. With Kobe on this team it is arguable they have the best fantasy player available. That being said they need to make sure to land a solid compliment to the Kobester.

Decision: Baron Davis

#10 – Beakers Ballers (keeper: Jason Kidd): A tough decision for the Ballers to keep Kidd over Duncan but with Duncan losing C eligibility this year it makes Duncan a little less appeasing. Kidd is capable of huge fantasy stats if healthy, sometimes a big if, but this team needs to go young to ensure that the future of the franchise is rock solid.

Decision: Kevin Durant

#11 – Knight School (Acquired in trade from the Brazicle Schnooks): Pending the trade review Knight School is looking at their second pick in the 1st round. With Carmelo Anthony already in the fold the GM can look toward adding a player that will help this year.

Decision: Deron Williams

#12 – The Dominators (keeper: Dwight Howard): Rumors circulate that this team is looking to move Dwight Howard, and if that occurs this pick could be changing hands, but I will base the move off the fact that The Dominators are picking in this spot. With Howard in the mix there is not a real need to risk going with youth with this pick. Look for a veteran who is established to help Howard win his first UPBA title.

Decision: Joe Johnson

#13 – Oslo Warrior (keeper: Chris Bosh): Another team affected by the loss of center eligibility with Bosh losing his status as a center. I’m thinking this team might go with a C with this pick, but the safe pick would be to get a player who does it all.

Decision: Lamar Odom

#14 – Break Away (keeper: Amare Stoudemire): With the top C in his possession, if not one of the top five players overall, Break Away will probably be looking towards a guard with this pick. Probably not Jameer Nelson like last year, but someone who has shown they can get the stats.

Decision: Michael Redd

#15 – The Untouchables (keeper: Dirk Nowitzki): Dirk is another victim of center eligibility. He will no longer be allowed to play that position, at least this year. The Untouchables have been one of the top teams the past two years, and Dirk has a lot do with that, but also this GM has drafted well. I think this team goes big here, grabbing a player who can play the C spot for them, and turn around 2 picks later and grab a guard.

Decision: Emeka Okafor

#16 – Cobblestone Pez (keeper: Steve Nash): The defending champs were loaded with talent last year, so much talent in fact that Deron Williams and Carmelo Anthony were dropped from the roster in favor of Steve Nash. Can’t argue the move as Nash is the best guard in the league. As for the future this team needs a young player to come in and be the foundation for years to come, but why do it now? This team should want to be the first team to repeat as UPBA champs. With that being said they grab the best talent on the board.

Decision: Ray Allen

UPFL Game of the Week

15 09 2007

UPFL GAME OF THE WEEK

#7 North Side Ghetto (1-0) vs. Wolfman (1-0)

They are the only GMs talking smack this week which gives this game a little more pizazz than the others. Plus they both have won UPFL titles so they might know what their doing with this fantasy thing.

The Ghetto is led by Willie Parker and Ronnie Brown in the backfield and they also sport an outstanding collection of pass-catchers in Lee Evans, Plaxico Burress, and Antonio Gates. Between these five players they have a good foundation. The Chargers D was a surprise last week and they will face a stiff challenge against the Patriots explosive offense on Sunday. What the Ghetto really needs is a strong game from Matt Leinart, he had a terrible game last week but he has the weapons to quickly turn it around.

As for the Wolfman the GM has two titles two his resume and win or lose still has more titles than the Ghetto. As for his players his team is led by their #1 pick Willis McGahee and hopefully some help from Marc Bulger this week. Bulger was horrible last week and a big week will be needed to support the Wolfmans effort this week. The surprise play of LaMont Jordan last week spurned the Wolfman but a tough Broncos D could spell doom for Jordan this week. The Pittsburgh D was big last week and could be even bigger this week against an anemic Bills offense.

In a game that could help the winner get an edge in the Lombardi division I see a North Side Ghetto win this week, as the match-ups favor the Ghetto.

The Ghetto Boyz: 118 ** Teen Wolf: 108

Greg Oden Injury – Fantasy View

14 09 2007

oden11.jpg The impact of Greg Oden losing his rookie season will have a big impact not only on the Portland Trailblazers and their fans, but also on the fantasy basketball scene. How does his injury impact his UPBA future?

In looking at the upcoming UPBA draft my expectations were that Oden would be drafted somewhere around picks #10 – #15. I didn’t see him going any earlier just because of the better fantasy options ahead of him. I also think that his constant opponent in debates, Kevin Durant, would have been taking before him in this years UPBA draft. Now that Oden is sidelined for the year where does he get drafted? Or does he get drafted at all?

My view is, if healthy Oden would have been a No. 1 center option in the UPBA and a keeper next year based on the fact that teams will keep two players after 2007/2008 year. I now see Oden not being drafted in the UPBA draft. That raises the question of when will someone pick him up during the season. If a team does it too early they will essentially be playing with one less man against the rest of the teams in the league, (the switch to daily changes during the week allows teams to use their entire bench) but if you wait too long some other team will probably pick him up. It will be a calculated risk for any GM, but a risk that could pay big dividends in the future. The question now is, does anyone have the guts to take Oden in the draft and hold onto him all year? We’ll find out Oct.14th, 2007.

UPFL Super 8 – Week 1

13 09 2007

After one week of UPFL action I think it is safe to say that some teams want to take back their 1st couple picks and others want to pat themselves on the back for their picks. Either way DON’T FREAK OUT and DON’T THINK TOO HIGHLY. It is one week and with all teams making the playoffs anything can happen and probably will. With that said onto the 1st Super 8 of the 2007 season:

#1 – Jon Kitna’s Optimism (1-0): 139 points and Tony Romo was sitting on the bench? This team has the running backs in place and two quality QBs to interchange with that a successful season should be expected.

#2 – AquaSplash (1-0): Tony Romo. That is all that is needed. You add the fact that this team had T.O. starting also this week and a big team score was no surprise. Will Romo play like that every week? Probably not, but solid depth all around will keep this team around the top all year.

#3 – The Pacific Ultions (1-0): Great RB play combined with a HUGE week from Plaxico Burress equals one win. Add in the fact that Donovan McNabb can play better and this team looks scary.

#4 – Blumkins (1-0): Drew Brees plays horrible and this team still wins. LDT has a terrible week rushing and this team still wins. Is the Vikings D/ST the defense to finally take over the Bears or Ravens this year? Very well could be, and with an expectation that their 1st two round picks will play better the Blumkins must like their outlook.

#5 – No Mercy in the Dojo (1-0): Last years runner-up picks up with a week one win. Tom Brady played like all expected him to, and the Bears D even in a loss were still solid.

#6 – Millen’s Men (1-0): Steven Jackson looks human this week and this team still wins. The WRs corps are probably the best in both conferences, and that could carry this team far.

#7 - North Side Ghetto (1-0): A bad week from Lee Evans and Matt Leinart will make this team feel good that it has good players at other positions. If the San Diego D can play that every week, this team just needs Leinart to play up to par to be a force.

#8 – IOwensU (1-0): A bad week from both Philip Rivers and Steven Jackson couldn’t keep this team down. The Wideouts were excellent and Clinton Portis erased some concerns about his injury history. IOwensU could be looking at their best year yet.
